STROKE DEFINITION

A stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA) occurs when a disruption of normal flow of blood to the brain, this in turn requires a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to function. Even a brief interruption in blood supply can cause problems. Brain cells begin to die within a few minutes without blood or oxygen. The area of tissue in which dead cells is called a stroke.
